New Walks Confirmed
We are now able to confirm two guided walks around the reserve this summer. Our 2014 events calendar gave a different date for our usual annual wildflower walk and the butterfly/dragonfly walk wasn't listed there at all. This is because at the start of the year neither walk had a leader assigned. However leaders for both have now been found for June 22nd and August 17th respectively. So both are now firmly scheduled. For full details see our events listing.
A family party of Goldeneye has been spotted several times over the last few days at SPRINGWELL LAKE (adjacent to Stocker's Lake). Goldeneye primarily breed on Scottish lochs and there have only ever been a handful of UK records of Goldeneye breeding away from Northern England and Scotland.
Butterfly Survey 2013
In the late 1990s, butterflies were surveyed annually at Stocker’s Lake but a lack of volunteers resulted in the survey falling by the wayside for many years. However, in 2012, we revived the butterfly survey and now have an enthusiastic and increasingly knowledgeable team who walk the reserve recording butterfly life from April to September.
Land Appeal Target Reached
Wonderful Result! The appeal for the acquisition of our piece of river bank - see the news items dated May and October 2013 - has gone very well and we have now raised the £6,200 we required for the land and the conveyance. Many thanks to over 100 members who supported this appeal.
