This winter FoSL converted a 1940s pillbox, close to the reserve, into a bat roost. This involved narrowing the gun slots, putting up rough boards for the bats to cling to and erecting a very solid, locked door.

The aim is to keep the structure at an even temperature throughout the year and to have no human interference except by trained experts. Now we must wait and see whether it attracts any bats, possibly in October when bats are looking for winter accommodation.
